Start where you are

In the process of making a service or product, there is a method to reconstruct everything from the zero points, but this is not necessary because it wastes much time and budget. Instead, it’s a better idea to make services based on the current state after assessing that. Some current components could be re-used and be the basis of new or improved components.

Assess where you are 

The current state should be assessed in order to recognize the chances of reusing the old components. Determining the current state should be based on accurate data from sources and the persons who might have useful information but also are in non-important positions should not be ignored because they could help to make the reports more accurate.

The role of measurement 

Measurement by metrics is useful but it does not take place of direct observations. Also, it should be notices that relying more than normal to reports and metric leads to creating false value for materics by people. Therefore, the metrics should be based on outcomes designed.

For example, A technician may ask users to send a ticket for every single software they want to install, while preparing their computer but in fact, they are essential prerequisites for getting the computer in the network. This adds up the measurement of “requests per day resolved by technician” but also reduces user satisfaction and makes a lack in the support process. Therefore, it could be better to set the metrics based on user satisfaction.  

Applying the principle 

• Looking at the useful points of the current state and their support in adding benefits. so it will be possible to determine how much from the current state could be reused. 
• Deciding how much improvements should be done to the current state to make it better. This leads to reducement of affording any useless job.
• The existence of a risk and change management procedure is useful and also essential. 
• Remember that in some circumstances, everything should be renewd and nothing could be reused but those are rare circumstances.
